Yellowstone National Park Earthquake The 1959 Hebgen
Lake earthquake occurred on August 17, 1959 at 11:37 PM MST. It was the largest
earthquake in the Intermountain West in historical times. The earthquake
measured 7.3 on the moment magnitude scale. It was located just outside the
western boundary of Yellowstone National Park, about 6.5 miles WNW of West
Yellowstone, Montana. Rock Creek Campground August 17, 1959. “You could
actually see the ground open up.” It has been 50 years since the Heb gen Lake
earthquake, in which 28 people died. Seven bodies were recovered from the Rock
Creek Campground and two from the Cliff Lake Campground. The rest were never found.

We were camping at Yellow Stone Park the night before the earthquake,
that night a bear got into our car and ate all our food. We were going to camp
the next day at Rock Creek Campground. But instead left that morning because we
had no food to go to the next campground. Was that just a coincidence or did
Ship or me from the future comeback to make sure we lived through the
earthquake?
